I have been a patient of Dr. Ley for the past few months and have experienced relief from muscle pain I have suffered over the past 30 years. I can now lift, bend, twist and, most importantly, exercise with weights.

"Dr. Ley is a professional health care provider who investigates the cause of pain and discomfort, not merely giving temporary relief through an adjustment which has short term benefits.

"Over the years I have been to a number of Chiropractic providers and Dr. Ley is the only one seeking the source of my problem whether it be food, nutrition, exercise, daily routine, posture, etc."

Chiropractic Care > Frequently Asked Questions

What is an adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is the art of using a specific force in a specific direction applied to a “subluxated” or locked up joint anywhere in the body that is not moving properly. Chiropractors use a hands-on approach in treating a person; however, at times a hand-held instrument may be used to treat areas of the spine or an extremity which may require a different application. Dr. Ley has been trained in the use of many different techniques and modalities and will determine, based on your symptoms (subjective) and objective findings, which treatment approach best suits you.

Can I adjust myself?

No. Since a chiropractic adjustment is a specific force, applied in a specific direction to a specific joint, it is virtually impossible to adjust oneself accurately and correctly. It is possible to twist or bend in a certain way to create a “popping” sound that sometimes accompanies a chiropractic adjustment. This type of manipulation is counterproductive, possibly making an unstable joint more unstable. This is better left to a professional.

Are all patients adjusted the same way?

No. the doctor will evaluate each patient’s unique spinal problems and develop an individual course of care. Each chiropractic adjustment builds on the one before. The resulting recommendations are based on years of training and experience. Each patient’s care is uniquely different from every other patient.

Can a person who had back surgery see a chiropractor?

Yes. It’s an unfortunate fact that up to half of those who had spinal surgery discover a return of their original symptoms months or years later. They then face the prospect of additional surgery. This too common occurrence is known as “Failed Back Surgery Syndrome”. Chiropractic may help prevent repeated back surgeries. In fact, once chiropractic care is initially utilized, back surgery can often be avoided in the first place.

Does chiropractic work for all types of health problems?

No, however, chiropractic care is successful with a wide variety of health problems not necessarily considered “back” problems because of improved nerve system function. With a normal nerve supply, the body’s natural healing capacity can improve a variety of health problems.

Can chiropractic help athletic performance?

Absolutely! Why do the U.S. Olympic Team, professional sports teams, and professional athletes in almost every sport rely on regular chiropractic care? Because it works. Chiropractic speeds recovery from injury, enhances performance, and helps prevent future problems. Sports chiropractic helps athletes return to peak performance by applying chiropractic principles to restoring biomechanical and muscular function. Athletes in contact sports such as football, hockey, basketball, and soccer are not the only ones to benefit from chiropractic care. Golfers, bowlers, runners, tennis players, skiers, and many others also have found that chiropractic care gives them a competitive edge.

Why do children need chiropractic care?

Since significant spinal trauma can occur at birth, many parents have their newborns checked for Vertebral Subluxations (areas of the spine which are not moving properly). Later, learning to walk, ride a bicycle and other childhood activities can cause spinal problems. Many childhood health complaints that are brushed off as “growing pains” can often be traced to the spine. Regular chiropractic checkups can identify these problems and help avoid many of the health complaints seen later in adults.

How long will I need chiropractic care?

It depends. Since each patient is unique, the recommended length and type of treatment varies from individual to individual. Based on your history, age, lifestyle or work habits, present health status and goals, the course of treatment will vary. I always encourage open communication so there are no misunderstandings with what to expect.

What should I expect on my First Visit?

The first visit is a fact-finding mission. You will be asked to fill out some paperwork. Your information is confidential and stays with us. A thorough history is paramount in determining how to proceed with the examination and even if chiropractic care is for you. The doctor will then perform a thorough examination which includes orthopedic, neurological and chiropractic tests. Although X-Rays are not taken on site, there may be indications that require you to be sent out for radiographic films. The doctor most often will treat you on the same visit. Questions are always welcomed and encouraged. We attempt to deliver the highest quality of care in a comfortable and relaxed environment.
